Sappho was a Greek poet from the island of Lesbos, who lived during the 7th century BC. She was known for her lyric poetry, which often focused on themes of love, desire, beauty, and femininity. Many of her poems were addressed to women, leading some scholars to believe that Sappho may have been a lesbian herself.
One of Sappho's most famous friends and companions was an aristocratic woman named Atthis, who is mentioned in several of her poems. Atthis is believed to have been the subject of many of Sappho's love poems, and the two women may have had a romantic relationship.
Despite the speculation surrounding their relationship, very little is known about Atthis herself. Some scholars believe that she was a real person, while others think that she may have been a fictional creation by Sappho to represent a composite of the women she loved. Either way, Atthis has come to represent the embodiment of erotic desire in Sappho's poetry, and her name has become synonymous with same-sex love in ancient literature.
